Putting together a very quiet system, unfortunately,

Being the cheap bastard that I am, I'm going to try to make a
quiet system with a DIY heatpipe to all the major components. I'm
thinking a big hunk of aluminum heatsink out back, and some heatpipes to
it from the processor and power supply. I'll let you all know how it
work when I get time to do it.
The other thing that nobody is mentioning so far is the heat levels.
It may be quiet, but is it an oven on the inside? If I unplugged all
the fans in my backend (4x thermaltake 80mm fans) it would be silent
as well.. for about 2 hours... then it would go silent forever.. :p
PVR's put off a pretty good amount of heat, as does a video card and
CPU, especially playing HD content.
Cooling <> Quiet in most cases.
your best bet is to use BIG fans (120mm) low RPM to get the same CFM
ratings with a lot less noise than 80mm or 60mm fans.
I've used noise-dampening material inside a case, which helps quite a
bit as well.
I'm still looking for a low-loss way to get a VGA and SPDIF signal
carried >50ft without significant loss, so I can put the frontend in
garage.

Black-Box makes boxes that you can use to extend your VGA range upto
250 feet. Who knows, they might have something that will work for your
SPDIF stuff too. Be aware however, their stuff isn't inexpensive.
