It sounds like it was divine forces at work! Sometimes you know it was just meant to be. The owner of the building my salon was in had bought the building next to it about 2 years ago. I'd looked at moving the salon there, since the space would be bigger and it would be on the 1st floor, as opposed to climbing the many stairs where we were at.
But then the recession hit, and I opted not to move. Good thing I listened to that inner voice telling me "nooooo, don't do it"! But now, the economy is brighter and I weathered the storm. So the larger room next door had still not rented, and so I went to look at it again. It would take putting up walls, adding plumbing for sinks, and new lighting, etc. This would cost some big bucks. As the owner was walking me out of the building, I commented on the smell of fresh paint. He nonchallantly mentioned that the tenants in the apartment had moved out, so he'd just had it painted. Yes, it's insane....but there was a 1 BR apartment inside this commercial building that looks like a Victorian cottage! So bizarre! Anyway, the owner asked me if I'd like to see it, and when I walked in..... I knew I'd found my "forever" home. I told him that I would take it and he said "don't you want to think about it?". I didn't even have to walk into any other rooms to know that this was a phenominal deal and I'd better snatch it up before someone else did. First, I've rented from this landlord for 5 years and he takes care of his buildings. 2nd, he's a cardio- thoracic surgeon, so he doesn't need the rental money. This is just a hobby for tax relief, I'm sure. This doctor will even empty the trash, vacuum, AND mow the grass of these buildings! So I felt very safe with him. He's never once raised our rent in 5 years and I don't have to worry about him selling the property or going into foreclosure. This is a HUGE peace of mind for me! So now I'm on the first floor, with a wheel chair ramp, a full kitchen, a bathroom with stackable washer/dryer, and the bedroom I use for my private pedi room. With all the closets and cabinets, I've got more storage than I need. The LR/DR has wood laminate flooring and that's where I do nails. I can afford the rent all on my own, so I don't have to worry about getting a warm body in to help me with rent, plus I get to stay in the downtown area that I love so much. The downside is now I have to get my new address on all my promotional pieces! Yes, sometimes it is just meant to be. If I hadn't commented on the smell of fresh paint...................? On a side note, my former neighbor was surprised and disappointed when I told him I was moving. When he found out WHERE I was moving, he exclaimed " I told the landlord that I wanted that apartment when it came up for rent!" Talk about being in the right place at the right time!
