In order to open a business account you'll have to file a fictitious name statement. I'm pretty sure mine is only filed for the county I do business in-- not the entire state. Banks let you open a business account without one unless your business name IS your name, ie; "Nails by Pam." There is the cost of having your name registered with the recorder PLUS you must have it published in a newspaper that meets specific criteria, which can also be pricey-- so look around. Sounds like the rules are different all over the place from the responses so far! You can use a personal checking account as long as you don't have client write checks out to the business name instead of your name and as long as you don't need official business checks for doing business with some entities-- I know there are some venues and suppliers who require a business check, not a personal check. If you are doing business under any name other than your own-- you want to register it in order to prevent another business from opening in the same name!

I had brought my vendors lic. , but the lady said that that only proves I pay taxes and that I had never "registered" my business name in Ohio ! WTH is this!? I asked her why I would register my name after 20 years of doing nails under this name. She gave me an example of a bank client who didn't register his name, ex. Ohio Carpet Cleaning, and when a competitor opened a business under the same name and REGISTERED it with Ohio, the original business owner had to CHANGE his business name, repaint his signs, his trucks, re-do his business cards, etc. Of course, there is a $50 fee to "register" your business name with Ohio! This is all news to me, what do ya'll think? When I register, is it going to bring an avalanche of paperwork down on me? What changes besides the fact that no one else can use your name?
