Katherine...I’ve had the craziest things happen to me, too! I called one salon
owner one time...and told her..”oops! I forgot to get my license out of the
reception area.” Her reply: “Oh....we threw that away...when you didn’t get it
we figured you didn’t want it.” WTH? I was panicked....until I remembered
that I had given them a colored copy....NOT my original license! I was sure to
call her back after hours and leave her a message telling her so, too! Months
later...same owner....I walked out of where I was now working and she had put
my W-2 under my windshield wiper on my car instead of mailing it to the address
that showed through the window on the envelope! I kid you not!

Another salon owner....threw me a shoulder bump as I was trying to go to
another area of the salon to gather my things! “Oh no! You do NOT want to get
physical with me!! That same owner had told me to come at a certain time to
get my things...but when I came, she asked me to come later in the day instead.
So I went back at the later time, door was locked...called the salon, no
answer...but the lights were all on. Called her cell...she answered and told me
to come back in an hour because she was getting her lashes done and was not
getting up to open the door. I swear to the nail goddesses! I was really
furious that she had jerked me around the entire day....and bit my tongue
nearly in two not saying anything. But she couldn’t stand my silent treatment
and followed me from area to area in the salon as I gathered my things berating
me.. “you’re just the tackiest person I know”...(well then why did you beg me
for over an hour to please not leave?) ”Get your nasty stuff out of my space.”
(I am trying to gather my things up as fast as I can) “I’m going to call
security and throw you out.” to which I did reply out loud “Good...please do
call them..because I already talked to them earlier when you locked me out!” I
went from , “It doesn’t have to be this way.” to “What makes you think I even
care what you think?” lolol

Another one...we had our first disagreement in 7 months of working very well
together....over nothing. I took it as a tired/nerves frayed/snap thing. We
talked it out, cleared the air, hugged it up. This was a Friday. We worked
together companionably on Saturday...”Have a great weekend, Girl” “See you
Tuesday”.....and walked in Tuesday to find she’d packed my things! I swear!
She wouldn’t even let me finish the week...knowing full well that I had 10 days
before I had to go take care of my Aunt who’d just had a stroke! No possible
way to find a place to work for a few days before leaving for an undetermined
time...who’d have me? And wouldn’t let me keep the appointments I had to make
the money I needed before being out of work for a few weeks.

So...I am sure there are all kinds of stories we can tell. All we can do is
try to be as professional as possible, but take care of ourselves...keep track
of our clients names and numbers....and give the salon COPIES of your licenses!!

Good luck!
Karen

All the changes you named are all deal breakers, IMO. Be prepared to leave the
same day you put in your notice. If your new space will not be ready for a week
or 2, wait until it is ready, then just quit that day with no notice. I know,
some people will say that is unprofessional, here is my reason for saying it.
Someone who has demonstrated the lack of professionalism that your salon owner
has demonstrated should not be trusted to suddenly behave professionally and
accept your 2 week notice. She is going to throw you out on the spot, not let
you look at the appointment book to check your appointments for the week, she
may even take your license off the wall and hide it from you, anything to stop
your move from being a smooth transition. You must protect yourself. Copy all
your appointments and client information before you give notice if you do not
keep your own book and client information. I had an owner do all this to me
once. I was surprised because it never crossed my mind that a business woman
would behave so unprofessionally. I should not have been surprised, she had
demonstrated repeatedly over the year that I worked there how unprofessional
she was, I was just too naive to expect it. Do not trust this woman to do the
right thing. Cover your but!

  Thank you Karen.
I have made my list of supplies and will be giving notice tomorrow . She has
decided to down grade the salon to about 500 sq ft. 2 hair stations and dryer
chairs , mani table stuffed somewhere in waiting room and oh there won't be
room for 2 nail tables so we will have to share or work something eles out.
Also using the pedi room for a dispensary. So I am not sure how she will handle
my notice , I am not sure if she will just kick me out or let me stay while my
station at the other salon is gutted and re done over the next few weeks.

I thank you all again for your input. I knew what I had to do just needed
some reassurance from all you wonderful nail tech groupies.

I agree...need to get your things out ASAP. Make a list of every single
thing....go from space to space throughout the entire salon and write down
anything that belongs to you. That way you won’t forget the disinfectant tray
like I did at salon #$@#% last Summer. Or the CND Shellac rack like I did at
salon @#$%$^ #$%^ like I did last Fall! lol

Seriously...this is not a good environment conducive to performing
relaxing, appealing services and/or building a successful clientele. Find a
better fit....soon!

    Best wishes,

Well, IMO, you need to move ASAP. I hate being in a position of having to
move ASAP because I don't have the time to shop around. This happened to me
once and I did not move to a great salon, but it was all that was available on
short notice. I was on short notice because the owner had not been paying the
rent and we were all (booth renters) being evicted. It didn't matter that I and
the other renters had paid our rent to the salon owner because the salon owner
did not pay the building owner, so, out we all went!

My advice is to move ASAP before your stuff gets put out at the curb in
the rain!

After you have a solid roof over your head, you can then evaluate the new
salon. Is it a good fit for your business? How do the stylists/nail techs work
together? How much walk in business can you expect to get each week? Is the
owner stable? Does she pay her bills (salon bills)? Do you have a key to the
salon? Can you have your own retail if you want it? How much does the
owner/other renters meddle in your business? If you decide that the new salon
is not a good fit, the general rule is to stay for 1 year to give it a chance
then move it it isn't working. Since it will be a planned move, you will have
plenty of time to shoo around for a better fit.

Btw, all the things you mentioned that the owner was doing are deal
breakers and you should by no means tolerate such unprofessionalism from a
salon owner.

Sorry you had such a bad experience. Just goes to show that any idiot can
open a business, but it takes a business woman to build a business.

Okay my wise friends, please excuse my grammar I sucked in English

I have been in a new shop now for 3 months, ( 3 stylist and me) and 5
weeks ago girl one decides to give notice. Owner goes into a panic, She had
before I came to shop 3 empty hair and 2 empty nail stations. I find out why no
one wanted to go in with me on advertising. Girl one has been planning this and
putting it off for over a year so I realize owner probably felt she would never
go. I am the techie in the group so I post 7 internet adds and while doing so
notice 8 yup you see it 8 other salons are wanting stylists! Owner has not done
anything to advertize the salons openings not before I came or now when needed!
not even a sign on the door or at the road for stylists!

Owner has told us she only has enough money for one more month rent and
girl one says yeah right, I was paying half of it 800 a month! So now I am
thinking that is why owner is in a panic. NO MONEY! So Yes ,I have been
shopping for a new space.
To get to the point 5 weeks have gone by the girl one is leaving on
Friday and owner doesn't know if she is going to be able to down size the salon
and what new rent will be and must have a commitment from me and the other gal
on how long we will stay. Owner has repeatedly ignored her responsibility

I have lost all respect for this women this is just the tip of the ice
cream cone on what has gone on. She didnt want to advertize because she had all
the clients she needs and doesnt need any more so when a manicurist was in an
accident she told me in front of 4 people that I would get them clients, ( she
knew the gal and she was referring clients to our salon , she now needs hand
surgery and doesnt know when she will be back) Owner has done 3 new clients
and couldnt get 4th one in so threw me a bone, then during the appointment was
checking my work and telling client that her and I do things very differently!
owner also pre booked client for 2 appointments first one with me and next one
with her!

Okay now you know some of the crap and I do mean some there is so much
more but I know you don't have time for a book!
I have been offered a place in town Traverse City, MI about 4 blocks
away.A very small space compared to where I am now, 50 bucks more rent, but 8
stylist 2 full time 6 part time. Plus walk in potential because it is truly
right down town vs the tucked away salon I am at never has walk ins. That is
alot of potential clients for me! I am sure if I talk to the owner she would
come down 50 on rent for 6 ms so that I can recoup the cost of putting in a
pedi station and re doing lighting and paint and such. I already have a table.
( I have to supply all equipment )

Should I stay or should I go? your opinions please.
