Hi---Our Emma has a screech...it will pierce your
eardrums, and when she was a younger baby, she did not like physical
contact...did not like to be held, ect. Ems would not
cuddle.
But, she loves to cuddle now, and she has done
fabulously with her therapies.....she will turn 3 on Feb
2nd.......
The baby boy, Walker, in the book by Patricia
Stacey,, had to eat a special formula, or he would vomit a
lot.......
Hugs,
britt

First I want to say, I do really know nothing about
this disorder other than my friend has a son with it. Please forgive
my ignorance.
well, the things that I wonder
about with my neice are...her cry is very unusual, kind of like a cat
screech. She will not cuddle. When you feed her a bottle her back
must be on your chest for her to be comfortable eating. She has tried
several different formulas and is now on a doctor prescribed formula
for babies who vomit a lot. (her mom does not bfeed) She was
born with an abnormality, a reflux, that causes her urine to back up
into her kidney and is on antibiotics indefintely to prevent bladder
and kidney infections. When you are holding her she wants to be faced out
but she keeps her left arm stiff, pushing you away. However, she does
seem responsive when you smile at her. I can get eye contact. they
live in a different state so I rarely get to see them but I didn't
notice any self stimulating motions. She is very active and crawled
early, but has no signs of walking, or even standing, as her feet don't lay
flat yet. I will look into those books...thank you so much for your
time.

found....
Hello---I just arrived home after attending BFing
support group. I will write more tomorrow, but one thing I would do
is to purchase the book, THE BOY WHO LOVED WINDOWS by Patricia
Stacey. Her son, Walker, presented much the same as Emma,
except for that my daughter has always been very physically vigorous, and
rarely ever ill. The boy, Walker, was VERY small for his age, and
has many eating difficulties, allergies, ect.......
Your niece can be assessed through the Dept of
Education,in the state whee they reside, I believe. Here in
Maine,Emma was assessed through Project Peds, Child Development
Services.
Emma was delayed in walking (18 months old), and
also was not sociable. She did not make good eye contact. Her
speech was markedly delayed. She starting to be very irritable at
around 6 months, wanted to stay in her crib a lot, as though the outside
world was too much to handle. She seemed to be different from the
start...when I thought about how my two sons were developmentally.
We noticed that Emma did a strange leg-kicking motion with her right leg,
starting at about 4 months old....a self-stimulating motion. She
also liked to smell everything. When older, she would line things
up....and also gaze at objects from different angles......like a hairbrush
would really fascinate her............
Emma attends a special Neurohealth preschool
full-time, and is making great progress! The earlier developmental
delays are caught, and therapy started, the better the outcome...the brain
is more malleable the younger you are.....
Another book is LET ME HEAR YOUR
VOICE............BUT--I would certainly purchase THE BOY WHO LOVED WINDOWS
first! In that book, the mom suspects autism from
birth.
Can you tell me what makes you believe she may
have ASD?

britt

Hi Britt, I have never corresponded directly
with you before, but I read all of your postings and enjoy them. I
suspect my neice could have some degree of A.S.D. She is only
8.5 months old, but she seems different to me. Can you tell me
what you saw in Emma that was different at that age? My neice is
very small for her age (below the 5th percentile) and her head is
porprtioned to her body, which it shouldn't be. She is happy and
seems to be "normal", but is not thriving and just seems different than
my baby of the same age. Her parents are concerned too. Any
help would be appreicated, Thanks!
Kelli

found....
Hi, everyone! First off, Happy New Year to all of
you! Each & EVERY one of you are very important to me in
many different ways.......and I appreciate that more than you can
imagine!
I recieved a gift certificate from a family member for the Maine
Made Shop......so, it didn't take me long to go there to spend
it. I saw something I liked right away, and knew that
that was what the gift certificate would buy....
A wooden, pink sign that said, "ALWAYS KISS ME GOODNIGHT".
A sign that will go in Emma's room, above her crib. The sign
makes me happy & sad at the same time.......at times, it has been
VERY stressful & very difficult for my husband & me to
adjust to Emma's Autism diagnosis, and to the behavior that often goes
along with it...to sometimes feel resentful, and then to feel very
guilty for feeling resentful...we love our daughter very, very much,
but are often fearful of what the future holds for her......I want
everyone to love her as we do......
BUT, no matter how difficult the day has been, we ALWAYS KISS HER
GOODNIGHT, and we start the next day with a fresh outlook, and
with regenerated minds & bodies. It is not her "fault",
and it is not our "fault". I love her for her...for being
her. Just because she exists. She doesn't have a fault. I
remember how being pregnant with her represented a time of great hope
and a fresh start for me. It still does. And, I have always
loved her so much that sometimes I can't stand it......overwhelming to
love someone that much. Enough of my being sappy......
You are all the best!
Hugs from Britt & the Gang
