I wonder what software is running on that server.
Sometimes the software dictates the java version.
Or, it came with the Linux install. 


By using different users, scripts, and/or environment variables, 
it's possible to have different versions of java to coexist 
on the same Linux server. See a blog post I did that

Naturally, test drive any changes in the dev and test environments before 
implementing them in production.
