Hey Everyone, Thanks for responding.
On the laptop, I installed Fedora 20 (full, not desktop). The wireless was found even during the installation. It's such a pleasure when software installs cleanly. :) I've also installed the Cinnamon desktop. It has the Start button, and the look and feel of XP. Highly recommened. I've since been able to install Oracle 11G, although there were some warnings and errors to overcome. Sigh. Gephi installed, and I get the graphics fine, unlike my struggle with Redhat 6.4: http://rodgersnotes.wordpress.com/2013/07/07/installing-nvidia-drivers-on-redhat-6-4-and-removing-nouveau/ Hopefully, the rest of the software installs will be just as smooth, and I'll be able to get on with more important things.
