Hi Jens, I assume that the PicKit3 is the newest revision of the same programmer.. I have the PicKit2, it looks identical. I used to use a JDM programmer that I bought off of ebay, but the newer PIC's won't program JDM, so I bought the PicKit2 about a year ago and have been very happy with it. When I first got into microcontrollers, I bought the cheapest thing I could find that claimed to do the job, but the more time I've spent on both PIC's and AVR's, the more I am certain that if I had it all to do over again, I'd just buy the 1st party programmer and forget all of the cheap 3rd party stuff. Having 1st party IDE support is way worth it, in my opinion. At this point, I've given away all of my cheap 3rd party programmers, and only use cheap 1st party programmers. :D
