Hi Adam,

thanks for the follow-up. I think I might just go for the PicKit2 since I am only using boring 16F controllers :-) I am not too enthused regarding ICSP, so I'll probably design a small board to specifically program the PIC16F627A (i.e. a 18 pin socket, maybe some caps and that's it). This'll do just fine for me at the moment. There is so much to pay attention to when using "real" ICSP..

I'll have to update my PICC-Lite compiler and MPLAB one of these days, though, I set them up in 2008 or so and they weren't touched ever since. ;-)

Thanks,
Jens

Might be worth comparing the specifications making sure that you you really need the PicKit3, since it appears to be twice as expensive... (But also comes with a cute ready-made board, too... ) Your call.

    Hi Jens,
I assume that the PicKit3 is the newest revision of the same
programmer.. I have the PicKit2, it looks identical. I used to use
a JDM programmer that I bought off of ebay, but the newer PIC's
won't program JDM, so I bought the PicKit2 about a year ago and
have been very happy with it.
When I first got into microcontrollers, I bought the cheapest
thing I could find that claimed to do the job, but the more time
I've spent on both PIC's and AVR's, the more I am certain that if
I had it all to do over again, I'd just buy the 1st party
programmer and forget all of the cheap 3rd party stuff. Having 1st
party IDE support is way worth it, in my opinion. At this point,
I've given away all of my cheap 3rd party programmers, and only
use cheap 1st party programmers. :D

        Hi,

        thanks for the replies.

But I am a little confused, Adam, you say PicKit 3 and then
PicKit 2. Is one of the two digits a typo or are both good?

I only see the PicKit 3 Debug Express at my electronics
        dealer:
        http://www.reichelt.de/?ACTION=3;ARTICLE=87178;PROVID=2402 Is
        it the same?

Another vote for the PicKit 3. I've had the PicKit 2 for a
long time, it's a great programmer.

I agree. As far as low-cost solutions go. The PicKit 3 is
            great. I've used
this as well as the Superpro, and had no problems at all
            with it.

The PicKit 3 is an excellent programmer. Very low cost
            (USD45), USB, very
            fast,
all 16F and 18F chips supported. I love it!
