- I'm not so sure about that.  The electrons are only being
- pulled by a few dozen volts, so they're basically drifting
- along.  You might get ghosting if you try to multiplex VFDs
- too fast with insufficient blanking periods. Certainly,
- they don't respond as fast as LEDs.

You, know that brings up a nice experiment to try. Have two displays,
of like technology, say 2 7-seg LEDs, 2 VFD digits, and two nixies.
Rig 1x2 multiplexed drivers for them, specific to each type. Pump a
unique numeral to each display, and run up the scan frequency as high
as you can, until the display starts to misbehave. Note the top scan
frequency of each.

You may have to play with the drive circuitry, to make sure its not
the drive circuitry, that's hitting the limit. Also the logic, may
have to be discrete logic, or PLDs, since a uC, might be too slow, if
it starts getting in the MHz range.

As for blanking intervals. Its always a good idea. I use them with
LEDs. There its be the drive circuitry, not LEDs themselves, that
peter out early.
