Hi,

Aleksander Zawada - whom most of you will know for his homemade Nixie tubes - uses 1% Argon in Neon. But I do not think that the amount of Argon in the percent range is too critical, since argon is only a very small part of the penning mixture and is only used to lower the breakdown voltage.

What do you think?

I'm having this discussion at the moment with a neon specialist - the
Penning mixture varied, as did the baking, pressure, type of glass&
level of Hg doping. Some tubes had getters which only fire once, so
refilling, which is what I'm investigating, is non trivial. Its a
completely different process to that used for neon signs...

Well, those are industrially made tubes. I am shooting for homegrown tubes that will last a couple of hundred hours, not more. Those tubes work without getters and without hg as well.

So I just have to start somewhere, and I think for that purpose the 2% solution should be fine, right? ;-)

Best regards,
Jens
