If you don't happen to have your own Nd:YAG laser, and you want to make cathodes at home, you can photoetch many metals just like printed circuit boards without the board. Granted, I don't know offhand if ammonium persulfate or ferric chloride will dissolve molybdenum, but presumably if they won't, something will.
