Others have used the HV5522 (I'm designing with the HV5530) because it combines the shift-register with the HV driver. The only drawback is that you have to level-shift the inputs to the HV55xx to 12V. I'm using comparators for that; have yet to run spice simulations to optimize for noise-rejection, etc.
