I strongly advise against building any kind of switching power supply, even 
if it's a proven design, unless you have a decent scope. There are too many 
weird things to mention here that can and do happen. Same for multiplexing.

Now, if you have a scope, go for it!  You will have some fun with the 
debug, and will learn a lot more from the experience than you can from any 
other source.
