Pete, thank you very, very much for the detailed reply. My skill on this topic is obviously not high enough to take on this design right now. I will take some time to process your suggestions and hopefully have questions for you in a couple weeks. I may still make a PCB with TO-220 footprint for the boost FET so I can experiment a little.
Greg, thanks for the FET suggestion and advice on how to use it.
