Is your console the totally "hard wired" version?
Unfortunately it is...however I have read that these hardwired
versions are the "truly rare and sought after" Neotek's as they have
an audible clarity and silky smoothness to them. I hope they have
something worth the mess I just went through...
First off, all Series 1s are NOT like this, many are truly modular.
I thought they didn't get modular until the Series 2's...I stand
corrected.
I've not had the pleasure of working on one like yours, and can't
imagine how it would be done. I have a pile of modules cut out of an
S3 that were all connected by dozens of "buss" wires between each
one. I had NO idea how one would go about working on one of these
consoles. So, I'm in awe of you for even attempting this and would
be very interested in looking at the photos of the job.
Yes this was the crux of the matter. I had to cut all the silver
"buss" wires between the channel I needed to remove and the channels
on either side of it, then desolder all the input connections from the
back panel to that channel before I could even attempt to remove it.
I found out that the "buss" wires were not the only wires shared by
the channels as their was another one hidden near the top of the
channel for the phantom power.
After I fixed the buss switch (a completely separate pain in the ass)
I had to resolder it all back together with silver solder (not so easy
to work with) and do resistance testing to verify the work. This of
course meant I had to buy a $300 Tenma impedance meter and learn how
to use it. Nice , easy cost effective repair, just the way it should
be.
Not for the faint of heart...
