There's OpenSim, which is based on it, but OpenSim doesn't have the walk-in audience and seemed also buggy to me. SL works really well, when it works; I've used it for years. I don't know what's happening to be honest - I heard from Helfe, and he doesn't either. I'd still prefer SL because it's world-wide..
