I'm sure this will be a really interesting project. The last DIWO thing was great. I am glad, however, that there is a question mark after the title. I find stuff like this (from the manifesto):
"The idea of civilisation is entangled, right down to its semantic roots, with city-dwelling, and this provokes a thought: if our writers seem unable to find new stories which might lead us through the times ahead, is this not a function of their metropolitan mentality? The big names of contemporary literature are equally at home in the fashionable quarters of London or New York, and their writing reflects the prejudices of the placeless, transnational elite to which they belong." profoundly worrying. The privileging of the local (and the imagined rural) in this way would have felt quite uncontroversial to Heidegger and his more thuggish friends and "metropolitan mentality and equally at home in ..London and New York" has for me a close to the nerve echo of "rootless cosmopolitanism" (Google it). I hope, furthemore, the irony of the call and much of the subsequent work and discussion taking place on the internet (which could only have meaning, let alone exist, at a certain level of civilisation) isn't lost on anyone. Of course none of that means it can't be a useful and interesting starting point for work. Of course it is.
