We had dinner with Cage at one point, and he was on about how bad jazz was 
because it had rhythm - no understanding of black culture at all, but 
willing to pass judgement. He also went on about how no one should vote, 
because it didn't make a difference. The Vietnam war was on. He was used - 
at least at that point - to expounding, not critique, certainly not self- 
critique. There are aesthetic issues that bothered me as well (I wrote 
about them in L*A*N*G*U*A*G*E - the language poets' magazine - at the 
time, but they were of a different order.) - Alan
