This is something that puzzles me more than anything else. I often get calls
from people who say "...so I reinstalled the software...". Why?

Reinstalling makes no difference whatsoever: you reinstall over the same
configs, you are reinstalling the same files and so on.

ie. reinstalling Microdot-II isn't suddenly going to make your mail 'work'
:)

If software reports a problem, it is a problem. Re-installing the software
won't eliminate this. A classic example relates to proxy servers. One night
they go to browse and consistently find they get 'error 61: connection
refused', as the proxy server is down...

So, they reinstall the software (!), no difference. Why? Of course, it isn't
anything to do with the software but, as they have 'suddenly experienced a
problem', they think that somehow the software has gone belly up and, as
they don't really understand the software, they think they best way to 'make
it work' is to reinstall ;)

Of course it doesn't work. They then phone us up the next day with '...so I
reinstalled the software...and it still comes up with connection refused'.

I answer: 'why didn't you phone before going through the hassle of a
reinstall? All you have to do is turn off the http proxy server' <- a 2
minute answer.

Anyway, you did the *right* thing by mailing the list and asking for help :)

It's amazing how many people have problems, reinstall the entire package,
and then find that nothing works, as they've forgotten how to setup their
email client...so they then phone us, so we have to then spend about 20
minutes going through their configs, again :(

Chris.
