I believe this has much to do with the quality of your connection
(ISP, phoneline etc.), and how busy the internet is.

The depth setting is the one you want. The number of colours is 2
raised to the power of the depth setting. e.g. 2^4 is 16 colours, 2^8
is 256 colours.
