But the CD got you up and running. That's the most important point, to
get a working setup, not the latest setup.

See the above point. The problem is that the NC3 CD doesn't give you a
working setup, because two of the programs are broken. The 3.1 version
will have working versions of everything, and they will be release
versions not pre-releases. It will never be fully up to date, because
Olli will probably release an update between pressing and publication.
