Tim was, I think, saying that there quite simply _won't_ be 500 people coming forward to make a pledge. The point he was - obtusely - making is that users are happy to sit back and moan about how things they aren't paying for aren't being done the way they'd like, but not (enough would) offer financial support to make it more viable for someone to devote more time to it.
