I have a Supra 56k that works great under DOS. The jumpers on the modem
card can be used to set the modem to Windows plug n' pray mode, or used to set a
specific memory address and IRQ. I have a US Robotics 33.6 that does
this, too (but 33.6 isn't v.90, of course). There are many models of
internal modem that allow manual selection of address and IRQ, and this is
*usually* the only function that is required for DOS to see it.
External hi-speed modems are generally ready to go as long as you're
plugged into a serial port that uses the 16550 UART for control, but there
are exceptions.
Other PNP modems often have a "legacy" driver package that can be downloaded
from the 'Net to configure the modem under DOS.
A useful methood is to check to see if the modem work under Linux, and if it
does, this is a good clue it's a hardware-based modem and will be OK in DOS.
That will narrow down your choices, and then you can verify the specs on
those units for final confirmation.

The people in that computer shop are brainless morons. Another clueless Microsoft
retailer no doubt. You asked a question that didn't involve inserting an auto-run CD
into a drive, and they became confused. In the future, look for the MCSE diploma on
the wall first, and if you find it,
run away fast.
