Subject: Re: Question about Sorting Email
Nettamer's Reader.exe (which is the program part that handles the mail
offline) starts choking with a message file (folder, bag) of about
500 KB. One reason (I suspect there are more) is that it tries indeed
to take the entirety of message texts (and index file), or at least
major part into memory; thus now way with a really big mailbag.
I use my homegrown reader (e.a. for this reason) for all the offline
doings; it needs free mem only for a part of the indexing information
(84 bytes per item) and thus should have a theoretically quite huge
capacity - the limit would be above 4500 mail items (say, with a total
of a bit less than 600 KB free mem before loading ReRead itself) and
rather illimited volume of the total mailbag (again, theoretically;
there it's the actually free space on the disk which is decisive).
I havn't yet have it to choke on sheer volume because I simply didn't
get together any mailfile larger than about 3500 items and ca. 12 MB.
so I wonder if it would work with this monster, <g>. Wanna try ?
BTW, it's really not very practical to let mailbags grow to such an
enormous dimension. There's a nifty little utility, SORTMAIL.exe (by
Martin Goebbel) which would sort the huge heap to any number of more
digestible selections, not only by subject/thread, author, or date, but
even by keywords in the mail body. You can find it at my www place
(and there's a link to Martin Goebbel's URL too - some nice other
stuff to be found there !)
