Both Yes and No! :-) Where I went wrong was to say ATH3 would identify
the firmware version - relying on memory is not always trustworthy. As
you rightly state ATI3 does just that. ATH3 is used by Askey to identify
the specific product as opposed to the rather generic model description
printed on the modem eg V1456VQE.
For example ATH3 might return the following :- EYS-01. With that
knowledge selection of that code from the list under the product
identification area on the Askey support-> driver-upgrade site leads you
the modem being identified as V1456VQE-R1 and then directly to the
relevant driver and firmware files.
The main problem as I see it is that the locking mechanism is
probably hard-coded into ROM rather than in the controller/DSP code
since the signal exchange occurs subsequent to connect negotiation.
