That Askey uses ATH3 as a command to identify the specific product is
just further proof that there is really no such thing as a standard
command set for modems.
It would certainly be handy to be able to identify the correct driver
based on the output of a specific command. Different modems identify
themselves in different ways. USR modems have serial numbers that are
displayed and from the serial number you can tell whether the modem was
sold by USR or as an OEM model, which also determines which drivers
and/or where you can get them.
To someone operating in a pure DOS environment, the "driver" isn't much
use except perhaps as a source for the best string for configuring the
modem. Firmware may be useful _if_ you have a way to flash the modem.
Zoom modems _can't_ be flashed in a DOS environment, for example. Zoom
requires Win95 or better for the flasher to run. Diamond Supra did
offer a DOS flashing program for the earlier 56k modems. I don't know
what sort of flash program Askey modems use.
BTW, I only mention DOS because if someone is using Net-Tamer, that
someone might actually still be using DOS and maybe not even have Win95,
though I guess that is less and less likely.
