 Just couple of points . As far as employee owned is concerned, some
of them have showed some remarkable achievements . For e.g.

There is also one brazil company which has democraticized
decision-making and all the decisions are taken by workers. The point
of who is boss and who is worker is moot. The name escapes me atm. I
do remember its privately held and many people are interested to know
how they do it . The one who started it all wrote two books which
supposedly shed some light on the innovations they did there .

I'm sorry I don't recollect more and my google fu is not what it used to be :(

I know its only one company and as rightly pointed one company does
not summer make but if we find some ways which can lead to more equity
in working, responsibility,decision-making, risk-taking and rewards
the better it would be.
