Think about it, I am not aware of any equivalents of EFF in India! All the
intellectual
masturbation that we subject ourselves to and the Gandhiji examples on the
list
won't help...

There is cis-india.org which does have some features of EFF. At the
very least they do try to do some research. Lokayat as an
organization is just a baby, it has only been in existence in 6 months
or something like that. Also they don't have a single agenda but
multiple agendas on their plate.

I was aware of CIS, India. But your pointers to likeness made me draw up "About Us"
pages of both the organizations.

Shameless copy-paste follows...

CIS:
The Centre for Internet and Society will critically engage with concerns of digital pluralism, public accountability and pedagogic practices, in the field of Internet and
Society, with particular emphasis on South-South dialogues and exchange.

Through multidisciplinary research, intervention, and collaboration, we seek to explore, understand, and affect the shape and form of the internet, and its relationship with the
political, cultural, and social milieu of our times.

EFF:
From the Internet to the iPod, technologies are transforming our society and empowering us as speakers, citizens, creators, and consumers. When our freedoms in the networked world come under attack, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the first line of defense. EFF broke new ground when it was founded in 1990 — well before the Internet was on most people's radar — and continues to confront cutting-edge issues defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights today. From the beginning, EFF has championed
the public interest in every critical battle affecting digital rights.

My Observations:
The EFF states that it champions public interest, and it goes on to say: By mobilizing more than 50,000 concerned citizens through our Action Center, EFF beats back bad legislation.
In addition to advising policymakers, EFF educates the press and public.

On the other hand, CIS comes off as a bunch of elitists. Pardon my ignorance, I am not even sure what they mean by "particular emphasis on South-South dialogues and exchange".

The mango-man has no choice but to remain in the dark.

Sincerely,

Amol Hatwar
