Hi,

Really appreciate all your valuable inputs. Sebin, I tried mallige
font in Inkscape, it is working. I will have to try Cinepaint and
Krita. Scribus not working with Indian languages is a big drawback.

I have tried to collect a list of softwares used in
print/web/multimedia journalism. Inputs on technical/functional
drawbacks/advantage of the FOSS alternatives will be very much
appreciated. There are some software listed for audio/video editing /
matching them with FOSS alternatives if any of us have tried will be
helpful.

1) Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & PowerPoint) - [ Open Office, Abiword ]
2) QuarkXPress - [ Scribus (no indian language support) / Inkscape
(not a publishing software but supports indian languages) ]
3) CorelDraw - [ Inkscape ]
4) Adobe PageMaker - [ Scribus ]
5) Adobe Photoshop - [ GIMP / Krita(CMYK support)/ cinepaint(CMYK support) ]
6) Adobe Type Manager (ATM)
7) FrontPage - ??
8) Macromedia Dreamweaver - ??
9) GIF Animation - [ plotutils, GIMP ]
10) Macromedia Flash 5 (Introduction) - [ Gnash ]
11) HTML
12) JavaScript (Introduction)

13) For video editing:
Avid, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier Pro.

14) For audio editing:
Nuendo, Cool Edit & Digi Design Protools

Video/Audio GNU/Linux
----------------------------------
Musix GNU+Linux, a GNU+Linux distribution based on Knoppix, with
special emphasis on audio production.

and video editing.

Video Editing GNU - Kino, Cinelerra, AVIDemux, Kdenlive, LiVES,
Lumiera, PiTiVi and Open Movie Editor.

Other FOSS alternatives for journalists:
--------------------------------------------------------
CMS - Drupal/Joomla/Plone
Version control – Subversion (will this be used?)
Participatory media/Citizen journalism - Gram Vaani (radio station
with just a computer)
Free encyclopedia – Wikipedia
Browser – Firefox
Email – Thunderbird
Calender – Mozilla Sunbird
Video/audio player – VLC Media Player
Chat client – Pidgin

Are there any print/web/multimedia media group who are using FOSS
already? Examples will also help in convincing.

Thanks,
Roopesh
