The struggle for freedom in knowledge is rooted in the struggle for
survival. For the unaware, domination by powerful interests (mostly
born out of money, though not always. let's not fool ourselves) has
only one response: violence.
Open knowledge seems to be the only way to avoid this trap. As the old
adage goes, better the devil you know than the devil you don't. I
modernise this by saying better to know what bedevils you, than to
mindlessly resort to violence.
+ 1 and may I add, the technology or digital technology so to speak has
become the 4th basic necessity after "roti kapda makan ".
Today ICT is used for every essential activity done on a daily basis.
Our personal date or information which constitutes knowledge has to be
protected.
We use ICT in rural development, security and education, not to mention
in civil services. In this context letting data go into wrong hands
might lead to devastation.
free knowledge and resulting free (and open) ICTs imply transparency.
So it is important to understand that struggle for open knowledge is
rooted to basic need.
Happy hacking.
