It is just that when you are using the managed mode, that the router determins the channel. I have set up many wireless systems, and when using the managed mode, the only place you set the channel is on the wireless router. The card gets set when it does the handshake with the router. For that matter, the Windows drivers do not let you set the channel when using the managed mode. When you use the ad-hoc mode, you need to specify the chanel, because you do not have something like the wireless router to "manage" the connections. But I don't know of any wireless routers that work in the ad-hoc mode. There may be some, but I don't know why you would want to use the ad-hoc mode with a wireless router in the system.
The thing you have to remember is that there are two different ways to set up a wireless network. The managed mode has one device in controll, and everyone talks to it. In the ad-hoc mode, every device talks to every other device. This works well if you have a bunch of computers in a local network, each with a static IP address. It does not work well when you want to use DHCP, and have a gateway to the Internet. Mikkel -- Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for thou art crunchy and taste good with Ketchup!
