New subscription to Optus broadband in Australia is presenting difficulties getting ADSL online with both computers.
Optus supports only Microsoft software, and the  D-Link modem they supply might be running a non-standard USB protocol.

Both machines are running KDE 3.3
The ADSL modem is not being found by either machine,
although I did get online just once while reinstalling Mandriva LE 2005 onto the Dell Pentium2 (wot, me desperate ?),
which deepens the mystery somewhat.

The Athlon 1.2 GHz is connected to the ADSL modem via USB, using KPPP to set up the connection.
Each attempt to go online returns the message
                    kppp can not find: /dev/usb/ttyUSB0
Please make sure you have setup your modem device properly and/or adjust the location of the modem device on the modem tab of the setup dialog
.
Have tried locations   /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 to 3
                                   /dev/usb/tts0 to 3
with both hardware control and then software flow control [XON/XOFF] selected
yielding same error message for each location.

The Dell Pentium2 is connected to the ADSL modem via onboard ethernet, using Mandrake Control Centre to set up the connection.
Placing cursor over Internect connection icon brings up popup "Network is up on interface eth0"
Right click on Internect connection icon brings up the Network Monitoring panel, showing "Not connected"
Right click on the "Connect adsl" tab hangs the Network Monitoring  window, with "connecting to internet .. " on the message bar.
Thunderbird has nominated port 25 (the default).
