I'm with Tom Brinkman on one aspect of this, a distro thats NOT dumbed down to
the lowest common denominator...
If somebody wants that, let'em run Windows...
Sorry - I didn't see Tom's post about dumbed-down distros, but without
more detail on his point, I'm not sure I understand what he meant by that.
As an IT/IS guy, my biggest issue with Windows has always been the
inability to fix core issues with 'Winders' systems. In most cases that
was due to a serious lack of access to proprietary code - a plague which
we all know too well, unfortunately.
For me, the freedom provided by Linux allows me to seriously reduce or
eliminate those types of bugs and issues. But IMNSHO, Linux also allows
me to show people how flexible and powerful it is, simply by my ability
to do things in Linux that can't be done in Windows.
Obviously, Redmond made a choice to restrict what users can and can't do
in Windows and we're seeing how those restrictions are coming back to
bite them in the butt, however, Linux allows us to go the extra mile and
do it much better.
So, OK. If we end up making something that's easier to install,
configure and/or use than Windows, I don't see a problem, I see a
feature. Since Windows will continue to dominate the desktop for at
least another year or so (that will probably change when people see what
Vista is all about!), then perhaps we're faced with a situation where
Linux will continue to be compared to Windows for a while yet.
In that case, and assuming that we believe that Linux really should
continue to grow in deployment and use, we may be faced with no
alternative but to make Linux easier for the end user. Otherwise, Linux
will grow only so far and then it could very well stagnate. Not a pretty
alternative, at least for me.
