You should be able to unmount it, either by using "umount /mnt/<mountpoint>"
from a command line, or else you may be able to unmount it by right-clicking
on the desktop icon and selecting "unmount". If you get a message saying you
don't have rights for performing an umount, then you need to open a root
window and "umount /mnt/<mountpoint>". The "<mountpoint>" is the name of the
directory in which the volume is mounted.

The other way is to open drakconf (MCC) ("Configure Your Computer") and do it
from there.

Once the file system is unmounted you can remove the drive. If it is a Windows
type of file system, then you may find that you need to do a "chkdsk" on it
from Windows every now and then, or else you can lose data.

cheers
