In some cases, I can't even get another W2k box to print either, so it
does not seem to be a unix problem exclusively. I'm fairly cautious
about security, and it may have something to do with the
security/access settings. This may be why the networked printers are
easier - nothing there but a printer.

Thanks for the possible fix, though - it was a good idea!!

Rikona,

OK, next thing to try,.....

Create a new workgroup on the Win2K box. Call it what ever you want (ie., printgroup) and add the network users who will be using the printer to that group.

So, for example, if one of the users on your network is 'rikona' with password 'somepassword', then add that user and his password to the Win2K box. Do this for all the Windows/Linux users on your network.

That way, each time they log onto their systems, onto the network, or onto the Win2K box, they will be a known user on the Wi2K box. While you're at it, on the Win2K box, check for permissions of the users who are now in the workgroup 'printgroup' and if possible redefine their individual permissions or the permissions of the whole workgroup.

I don't have a Win2K box nearby, so I can't remember the exact dialog boxes to look for or their names, but they have to do with permissions for the printer share.

One more thing that might be a little to obvious, but you might need to add the user 'root' and root's password to the Win2K box, since cups will try to connect as root when sending print jobs to the Win2K box.

Either way (with or without root user), KDE Control Center should allow you to scan for, and set up the printer, possibly without the root user's name and password.
