Success! I decided to start again from scratch, so I did a clean install of Mandriva, followed by a new installation of Xfce4, on to my "experimenting" hard drive (just in case it still didn't work!).
All is now well and Xfce is working properly. I have tried most things and have not come across any problems. I can only assume that 'something went wrong' with the previous download. Thanks to Margot and Joe for your help. Special thanks to Charles for an excellent set of packages.
