Thanks Margot. Something peculiar is happening here! With KDE installed, I got the extra - non working - icons on the XFCE desktop, that I mentioned in my original posting (second Home, second Wastebin, etc). I deleted them, only to find they were no longer on the KDE desktop. So I got them back on the KDE desktop and added a couple more. They were *all* back on the XFCE desktop again. :-( My latest idea is to do a Mandriva installation with, perhaps, just the lean IceWM desktop, This has no icons on the desktop, but will have installed the basic packages.
