Okay, I've given up on Cedega. I should have listened to the people at linuxgamers.net, it's a piece of crap.
Asked for support as to why Steam could not see my video card: 'cedega passes bogus info about your card to the game...<some nonsensical rationale>' and: 'Hmmm, I don't know if a GeForce 4 Ti will run that' Wow. Proprietary software rules :-\ Anyhow, I got winex to build successfully, as far as I can tell. I currently have wine installed from Mandriva, should I remove that and install WineX instead? Anyone who has been down this path (in particular if you've gotten HL2 to work), please let me know if there's anything I should watch out for before I go in head first, or if there was some resource that helped you get it going.
