I was taking another look at the wine howto about an hour ago, for the thousandth time, and the only thing I had not really looked at was my wine version. I had built the CVS version, so I just assumed (ya, I know) that I had the most recent version. Still, I went to a term and typed 'wine --version'. Oh man. It was from like 2005. In all the jumping back and forth between installing cvscedega and all the necessary components, googling errors, going pretty much nutso, I had never installed an updated wine version. Turns out there's a Mandriva 2006 RPM. Sheeeeeee-it. Installed it, ran 'wine Steam.exe', and a few breathless seconds later, doesn't the login window come up. My punishment for being so fucking stupid? It takes about 3-4 hours to install over the 'Net (installing from the CD's is hopeless, as Ronald will tell you), and I'm leaving for Ottawa in 10 minutes. I won't know if this works til I get home on Monday.
