Ralph, are you *sure* /home is empty? Is it it's own partition, or just a dir off of /, as Miark asked? Do an 'ls -l /' to see if you're looking in the wrong place. The upgrade created a /home dir off of root, perhaps? An upgrade has never, in my experience, wiped any data from the /home dir or partition.
