would help to have a log of one of the times when the screen fsck'ed up.
probably won't show anything, but can't hurt to try.

here's a couple of other wild things to try:

comment out the 'dri' module (near the top). Direct Rendering Infrastructure
is occasionally problematic.

down at the bottom, comment out every "Display" subsection except for this
one:

      SubSection "Display"
                Depth     16
        EndSubSection

and add a 'DefaultDepth 16' line to the beginning of the section, above the
SubSections.

probably won't make a difference, but some drivers seem to be more
likely to work in 16-bit color.

if anyone actually knows better than me (not difficult), please pipe up. :)
