Hi Roger

Sounds like you've had a trying time of it. The config file that 'X' uses is 
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 make sure that you don't have a XF86Config that it 
might be using instead. Start Xconfigurator and choose Generic VGA for the 
video card and 640x480 with 8bit colour and Standard VGA for the monitor.

If this works from this base change the monitor first, when this is working 
at a reasonable setting, change the video card and when this is working in 
640x480, change the resolution and colour.
