I followed Robyn Mannigs suggestions to go the generic VGA card route. I needed to use Xconfigurator with the --expert parameter to allow the card setting to be altered after it was automatically identified. Just prior to Xconfigurator, I renamed the XF86Config and ...-4 files.
Once in Xconfigurator I was able to bounce back and forth changing the card settings from list to unlisted cards, VGA, SVGA, I128 etc. with various monitor settings. The VGA/SVGA drivers were at least made the monitor click into mode but still with a video proble. I came to realize that there is a problem with the I128 driver and my machine. Being a packrat and not throwing anything away, I reinstalled the original V7 Mercury card that goes back to the eary 90's. Was able to get X to start but the wrong driver was identified but was unable to get back to Xconfigurator. Completely re-installed RH 7.2 and I've been surfing Gnome and KDE for the past hour. Thanks all. The faster we go the rounder we get. :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dexter Filmore" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, December 30, 2001 5:43 PM Subject: Re: [Newbie]Another one with an XFree86 problem > No9 have been known to cause trouble in linux, but as far as I remember > there have been HOWTOs bout that, at least on older distros like > SuSE6.2.
