How big is /tmp? Is it in a separate file system by itself, a
virtual
memory backed filesystem, in the root file system, a symlink to
somewhere else?
(All info today is from memory, the system is at home and I can't get
on-line
from there until I get this going again.)
I'm not sure how big /tmp is. It's located in the root file system, with no
links anywhere else. What bugs me about it is that it was big enough
until a month ago. What changed and how do I repair it?
Do yourself a favor and create a normal user account. Use that to
look
around and get to know your system, like how many filesystems there
are,
where they're mounted, how much swap you have, where the log files
live
... and only log in as root if you can't log in as a normal user,
and you know why.
I have two user accounts set up. When I startx in them, I only get the
blank Gnome
screen without any menus, so they're pretty useless to me. The info I've
read (man
pages and the half-dozen Linux books tell me that I need to copy something
over to
have a usable user X session - but for some reason I never seem to copy the
right files to the right place. The ones I have copied don't make any
difference. So in order to use X at all,
I have to log in as root.
I've been using the system for about a year under RH 6.2 without many
problems until this.
Sadly, If I'm lucky, I get to use the thing about once a week, so it means
limited time to
really dig in. At this rate I may be back up by Memorial Day.
Any suggestions?
