What changed is that you stored more files in the root filesystem.
Logging in as root, your home directory is in the root filesystem, so
any mp3s and jpegs you save in your home directory take up space in the
root filesystem. Learn about the df and du commands and try to figure
out how much space you have and where.

This has always been the case? You've never used it successfully except
as root since you installed it?

You have my sincere condolences. I'm struggling to restrain myself from
launching into a vitriolic rant about how I've devoted my life to
computing since 1965 and I can't keep up with all this complexity (I'm
not an idiot. National Merit Scholar and college graduate, Electrical
Engineering, not Basketweaving). And you think you should be able to
dabble in it happily, about once a week. My condolences really are
sincere. When they told you it was easy they lied.

the world in 1982. -- http://www.tom.womack.net/computing/prices.html
