It looks as if you were using a lower resolution than what your screen wants you to 
have. This
could be due to you running a lcd screen (lap top or flat panel) these like best the 
resolution
they are build for... 
Look in your screen section you should have (at least) a subsection display with a 
mode line, I
would just set the desired resolution on that line.
If you have more than one subsection display, they usually differ by the depth. In 
that case set
the default depth to the subsection you (or your screen) likes most...
One other (ominous) possibility is that your card is not recognised and that X gives 
you 640x480
on a screen which is made for something a bit better...
In such a case another shot at posting your config and log might help...
