Look at Lionel's reply from earlier today.
Thanks to you both for your suggestions. After fiddling around with the
XF86Config file, with nothing making any difference, I finally re-ran
make World and make install and now it is finding its fixed font ok. I
don't expect I'll ever know what went wrong, but the first time I did
the build, the make World seemed to go ok but the make install failed
and I had to install a few extra libraries to get it to complete. Perhaps
their absence caused something to silently go wrong with the main build.
The problem now is that X is not detecting the screen resolution correctly
and my windows are appearing very small and surrounded by a sea of black
screen.
