Illegal Instruction! Yow! Does it actually work as root? I mean, have you done enough as root to feel confident that it's basically OK, or did you just log out again? You know, you haven't told us anything about your platform, or what version of XFree86 you're trying, whether you compiled it yourself or installed a pre-built binary.
