oops...I guess that would be usefull info...I have a HP xh575 Laptop, (its
the club price version of N5xxx models)...
It has a CyberBlade XP card and an LCD screen of 1400x1050 pix.
I installed redhat 7.2...(Xfree4.1) upgraded to my own build of Xfree86 4.2
for CyberBlade support...but it did not work...waited till the binary
distribution of 4.2 was available and tried that, no luck either...so I
formatted and re-installed red-had from scratch..back to XFree4.1...Got
XFree 4.1 to work with my card using the vesa driver, (but it does not
support my screen size so I'm stuck with a smaller display).
When I log in as root, things work well...no problems, GIMP, Mozzila, DDD,
Gnome, remote apps..all ok...but logging in as a non-su...the gnome startup
screen appears..and right before the desktop should appear, it dies...
looking closer at the log, these are the last lines in a non-su attempt:
GetModeLine - scrn: 0 clock: 0
GetModeLine - hdsp: 1280 hbeg: 0 hend: 0 httl: 0
vdsp: 1024 vbeg: 0 vend: 0 vttl: 0 flags: 0

and this is the last line on a root attempt...
AUDIT: Tue Jan 29 12:16:05 2002: 2127 X: client 5 rejected from local host
everything else is virtually the same in the log....(this is almost what i
get when I do a diff on the files). It appears as though the non su tries to
do two extra steps (GetModeLine) and then dies? Wierd!
